Official AI upload limits vs. provisional Split2AI guidance
Verified September 12, 2026: ChatGPT has a 512 MB per-file hard limit and a 2M-token cap for text/document files. Gemini Apps allows up to 100 MB per supported non-video file and up to 10 files per prompt. Claude individual chat allows 500 MB per file, up to 20 files per chat, and PDFs up to 1,000 pages. Claude project files have a separate 30 MB per-file limit. PDFs of 100 pages or fewer receive text and visual analysis in Claude; pages 101–1,000 are text-only.

50 MB or less: smaller / safer-side. 50–150 MB: caution; consider splitting. Above 150 MB: large; splitting strongly recommended. These are not official platform thresholds and do not guarantee successful upload. Browser-memory warnings are a separate provisional client-side heuristic, not AI-service limits.
Common limit mix-ups
Claude 500 MB vs 30 MB: 500 MB applies to individual chat uploads; 30 MB applies to project files. The official ceiling depends on the Claude surface you use.
Claude 100 pages vs 1,000 pages: 1,000 pages is the PDF upload page ceiling. The 100-page boundary determines whether Claude analyzes visual elements in addition to text.
